Campsite

Campsite

We also have a campsite at Shaugh Bridge, which we use throughout the year but in particular in the Summer Term.

Whilst at times this can be inconvenient, we encourage lift sharing and for parents to stay for evening or afternoon activities.

About the Campsite

The land belongs to Maristow Estate who let us use the site by means of an annual licence. We are not allowed to sublet or rent out the site in any way to other users.

The current hut was built in 1971 by 13th Devonport Scouts and passed to us in 1985 when they closed. The hut was built with help from ECC and Wimpey Homes. It has one major makeover in the late 90s with help of a small lottery grant. There is a plaque inside dedicated to Peter Jones of the 13th Devonport Scout Group who died on 14 June 1971 aged 19. We know nothing more of Peter or the circumstances of his death.

Maintenance is the responsibility of the Groups parents committee and maintenance is co-ordinated by Brian Boucher to make sure the hut is safe, secure and ready to use when the different sections want it. We aim to have at least one annual workday when many hands can join in, but Ian would be pleased to hear from anyone with particular building skills, time or enthusiasm to help out.

It is a fantastic resource and so many young people have tales to tell of their visits to the site. Long may it continue.

Directions to our Campsite

ENTRANCE IS THROUGH THE BIG GATE ON THE BEND – There is a lock on the gate, but it will be opened when we meet out there. Be careful on the road and remember to shut the gates to prevent animals escaping!

(If using SAT NAV – We are halfway between postcodes PL7 5HD & PL7 5HE and is as close as you can get) The grid reference is SX 532 636 if using GPS.

To get to Shaugh, follow the A386 towards Tavistock and Yelverton. Just after the Belliver Industrial Estate roundabout, take the first right, signed Bickleigh and Shaugh Prior.

Pass through Bickleigh Village and beside the military base. Take the first left signed Shaugh Prior. Follow this for about 2 miles all the way to Shaugh Bridge. There are 2 car parks, one on each side of the bridge. We recommend the larger one on the East side as it is busier and safer, but do not leave valuables and things on display. On a sharp bend in the road is a traditional gate about 50 metres from Shaugh Bridge on the Bickleigh side. The land is privately owned and not a public right of way nor can we authorise the use of the campsite for non-scout events.

Alternatively you can get there from Plympton.

From Colebrook village follow signs for Borringdon, Elfordleigh, Shaugh Prior. At Beatland Corner Cross Roads, turn Left DP”Shaugh Prior”. Pass through the village and downhill to Shaugh Bridge. Park in the car park before the bridge and walk over the stone bridge. Campsite is on the left.

2nd Campsite – Oakdean

All directions are the same as above. Except when parking in the small carpark, this campsite is accessed by following the river upstream 50 metres and entering through a small gate beside the river. This site is owned by Shirley and was previously used by 42nd Plymouth. This field is used primarily to enable us to have 2 sections meeting at the same time and again we pay a nominal annual amount for the use of this field which we have to book each time we wish to use it.

Put your phone down and what are you left with? Just teamwork, courage and the skills to succeed.’
