Beaver Scouts - a section for the 6-8 Year Olds

Beaver Scouts are for both boys and girls aged between six and eight years old. They belong to the first and youngest Section in the Scouting family. Young people can join Beaver Scouts in the three months leading up to their sixth birthday. They can move to the next Section, Cub Scouts, between eight and eight years six months. Easily recognised by their distinctive turquoise sweatshirts, Beaver Scouts enjoy making friends, playing games, going on visits and helping others. They usually meet together once a week in a Beaver Scout Colony. Some Beaver Scout Colonies also organise Sleepovers. These are often the first time a young person spends a night away from home. They take place in suitable buildings, often Scout centres.

The Beaver Scout Promise is:

I promise to do my best
To be kind and helpful
And to love God.

The Beaver Scout Motto is:

Be Prepared

Beaver Scout Section Report 2010/11

During the past year the Leadership of the Colony has remained the same with Alison and Darryl Newman as Assistant Beaver Leaders and Jamie Fryer as a young leader. Colony activities at both Group and District level have been well attended and enjoyed by all especially those at Shaugh Prior during the summer months. During those meetings the Beaver Scouts and their families spent their time lighting fires, ‘cooking’ a wide variety of food (meatballs, fish and chocolate fondue being the favourites) and playing games in the woods around the camp site. These evenings enable the Beavers to experience a valuable sense of freedom in a controlled environment and the demand is always for more of these evenings.

In the hall the Beavers have taken part in a wide selection of crafts, games and badge related activities. It has been good to see Beavers enthusiastically working for awards at home as well as during meetings and making excellent use of the Group website to find out what they can achieve. This year, with the other sections in the group, we held our own Christingle Service at Compton with Nigel and the Minister, Doug Rix, leading the service for us. We managed to raise several hundreds of pounds for The Children’s Society.  For our own Christmas activity we went once more to Ski Plymouth and everyone enjoyed snow tubing and tobogganing on a very cold, icy evening when it actually snowed.

With other members of the District the Colony  spent an afternoon earning the Explore badge by taking part in various science activities organized with the assistance of Professor Jo. We also spent a lovely summer’s day at Paignton Zoo where the top attraction was not the animals but the play equipment! An autumn afternoon was whiled away in the company of other Beaver Scouts from the District carrying out various craft activities. In December we went on our traditional Breakfast with Father Christmas and again had a ride on Albert the steam engine at Coypool. Not just an icy day this year but also a very snowy one! The children loved making a snowman with Father Christmas and actually saw deer roaming through the snow in the trees beside the railway line. After Christmas the Beavers also enjoyed an afternoon of fun and magic with Wishy Washy. Some of our Beaver Scouts took part in a District Beaver Sleepover in February and as well as taking part in various themed activities did get some sleep!  Some also took the opportunity to attend a swimming evening with the District and gain a Swimmer Staged award at various levels.

Alison, Darryl and I would like to thank all the parents who come along and carry out rota duties which enable the Beaver Scouts to continue to enjoy an active and fun-filled weekly programme especially Kate who has become a stalwart helper this year.  We would also like to thank Clive and Chris whose help has been of tremendous value to us all.
